Hybrid Meet and Greet and Map Presentation  (SMCGS Monthly Meetings)

St Mary's County Memorial Library- Leonardtown
This will be our first hybrid meeting - both in person for first portion, and combined zoom and in person for 2nd part.
First part will be hands on in the Maryland Room where the SMCGSI resource collection in housed.  
Second part is presentation  Searching Historical Maps – Eric Benson, Geographic Information Systems Manager for St. Mary’s County, and Tim Benson, webmaster for the St. Mary’s County Historical and Genealogical Societies, will give a talk about historic map resources available for St. Mary’s County and will demonstrate the new Interactive History Map available on the St. Mary’s County website.  This online, interactive map gives the ability to overlay dozens of historical maps and images of the county over top of current maps and imagery and then seamlessly pan between new and old to see how places have changed over time.  It also allows viewing of historic trust sites, historic districts, historic hundreds and election district boundaries, and facilitates searching for indexed historic place names.  This will become an invaluable resource to many researchers or just the curious.

Finding Swedish Ancestors  (SMCGS Monthly Meetings)

Member Tim Benson will present his research of his great-grandparents who came to the US from Sweden in 1890.  As part of the presentation, he will give a primer on Swedish church records, an amazing free, online resource that documents the entire Swedish population from birth to death for 300 years.  He will chronicle his great-grandparent’s movements from small town Sweden to the capital of Stockholm, and finally their emigration to Kansas City where they ran a bakery for years.

Be A Super Sleuth: Accessing Images in Family Search  (SMCGS Monthly Meetings)

Jill Morelli, CG, CGL will present "Be A Super Sleuth: Accessing Images in FamilySearch".  Over 95% of the online records of Family Search are not accessible by a surname search.  Newly digitized records are being put in Images and not in the Card Catalog.  Jill will tell us how to find these records and access the information.  Also covered will be the new Beta Lab all-word document search.
